United States Square Fees Structure

Famous for its square-shaped card readers, Square (or Squareup) helped small business owners accept credit card payments easily.

Square’s fees are mainly divided into card-present (Swipe) and card-not-present (Manual) payments.
A customer tapped his card on your Square reader will be considered a card-present payment.
If you are on the phone with the customer and keyed in his credit card details, then it’s a card-not-present payment.

A swipe payment is usually 2.6% + $0.10 per order while a manual payment is 3.5% + $0.15 per order.

You can also set up your eCommerce store with Square and per order fee starts from 2.9% + $0.30 depending on your plan.

For more information, please refer to their processing fee page.

It’s also interesting to know that Square charges the same rate for every card. The processing fee of an American Express card will cost merchant the same as a Visa card.

Card-present (Point-of-Sale)

There might be additional charges for the point-of-sale hardware but that is out of scope for this calculator. Please refer to Square’s in-person payments page for more details.
